Aberrant was inspired from both novels that I loved reading, The Hunger Games and The Handmaid's Tale. It also is a culmination of ideas in society, personal experience, and of course creativity. In China, there is the one child rule. How far away is our world from saying, "you have one child, that's acceptable but anymore would take away from the resources we need for survival. You must hand over your second child, to take someplace else." One would hope that we'd speak out but if the government was oppressive, and if there was no free speech, you might quickly fear for you and your family's life. It's easy to see how the world could quickly become Dystopian, especially when that government is giving you everything you need to survive and could just as quickly cut you off and throw you into the Gravelands, or worse - kill you.
I started writing Aberrant in early 2011 and finished it the summer of 2012. Within a few short months of searching for a publisher, LazyDay Publishing signed me and the rest is history!
The Aberrant Series is a Young Adult (YA) Dystopian Fantasy with some elements of romance.

Not terrible but definitely not the best of YA dystopia

This wasn't a terrible book, but there's a couple of things that I just couldn't get over. But first, the good, because I'm feeling nice!
1) Fast paced. This is a blessing, and a curse. It's a blessing because like all book reviewers, I need to get through my books quickly so I can get to the next one. We don't like to be bored, because that slows us down. I burned through the 250 pages with ease because the plot kept moving. I like wanting to know what comes next, and that's what Aberrant did for me.
2) The ending. This isn't one of my spoiler-filled reviews, because deep down, I actually do enjoy not spoiling endings for people. But I will say that in the last couple of chapters, things really pick up. You're left wanting more at the end, and that's ALWAYS a good thing! Kudos to Ms. Silver.
3) THE PLOT TWIST. Yayyyyy, a plot twist I wasn't expecting! This is also towards the end, and it's one that caught me off guard.
Regardless of all this good, the bad just couldn't be ignored.
1) EDITING. PLEASE. FOR THE LOVE OF SEASONED SWEET POTATO FRIES, CAN WE PLEASE START REREADING WHAT WE WRITE?! I get that this is an ARC. I get that this is self published. But the grammatical errors were just STUPID. Like, mixing up "you're" with "your." COME ON! There are just so many of these.
2) The chapters. It's like the author wanted a bunch of chapters, and decided that when she felt it was the right time, she'd put some generic closing sentence at the end of a paragraph and then jump into a new chapter. Seriously, I started anticipating when the next chapter would appear. More often than not, I guessed correctly each time. Not. Okay.
3) The characters. Joshua had no depth. I couldn't picture this guy. I will honestly forget about him by tomorrow, because there was nothing desirable about him. He wasn't given enough emotion or time. Like, dude, you found out your mom has been lying to you your whole life. How can you have NO REACTION to this??
And then Olivia. I mean, she's okay I guess. But memorable? No. She's a weak character given strong traits, and it doesn't mix well. You should know when your character isn't up to the challenge, and accept it.
Giving this book a three star review seems nice of me. Maybe I'm being too nice. I think the ending was so out of left field that I became biased, because up until that point, I was seriously considering a one star rating. Oftentimes, the book reads like a poorly-written Hunger Games fanfic. There's archery, tributes, escaping from the government with a boy, and even matching outfits. And a shit ton of other stuff, but it's not really worth drawing comparisons because that's not why I write reviews.
So, three stars, and probably not a book I would recommend. It just left me with a lot of meh.

Great Dystopian Novel!
By Step Into Fiction
Dystopian is becoming my new favorite genre. There are so many different things you can do with this genre and I think that is why I like it. So many stories can come from it and they are all completely different. With Aberrant I almost got a Hunger Games vibe, only in the fact that they were chosen to do something that they had no choice in.
I liked Olivia and Josh straight away from the beginning. You could feel a connection through them and even though they weren't completely honest at first with how they felt, deep down, I think they both knew. After the marriage ceremony this book picks up super fast and keeps going. It is a fast and adventurous ride. Right when you feel something needs to happen it does, it is both expected and unexpected. But it happens at the right moment so you are not bored at all with the book.
The different trials and places both Josh and Olivia go through do not sound like anything fun, but they make it through with each other in hand. In Haven, I was a bit scared how things were going to turn out. I didn't like Haven right from the start. You could feel something sneaky going on there and it honestly wasnt that different then Genesis. The gravelands didn't seem to bad, but after Haven was the first time I really understood how ruthless they can be.
I am all ready to read the second book in this series. This is by far my favorite dystopian book of 2013, and Ruth Silver is one of my new favorite authors!! Pick this book up!!! I love love loved it!

Very new and unique! Fresh dystopian novel!

A plague and it's cure has wiped out civilizations' ability to naturally conceive children, and controlling governments keep their citizens under constant oppression as they dictate their day to day lives. Olivia Parker is the exception. After being forced to marry at eighteen, she looks towards her monotonous future of living in Genesis; lucky for her, she was forced to marry her best friend, Josh. A horrible series of events ensue as she finds out that not only was she born under abnormal circumstances, but that she may be the last woman with the ability to conceive. Trying to escape a life as a test subject, Olivia wanders with her best friend, Josh to find answers and a place to really call home.

This book is quite unique and thrilling! Not just in subject matter, but in the constant upbeat pace that is set. There's never a dull moment. This is great because I never knew what to expect next, and it kept me wanting to read more and more as each chapter passed, just to find out where Olivia will end up next, and what consequences she might face just for the mere fact that she was born. I love how the different governments are described in how they want to use Olivia in their rebellious war, and how Olivia learns more about herself and the different systems of society. Everything that glitters is not gold, and she and Josh find this out the hard way. Olivia's determination in wanting control over her own body and life choices is admirable and she will go through any depths to get it.

One of the first things I'd also have to say about Aberrant, is that I enjoyed Olivia and Josh's relationship. There's no instalove, or seedy out-of-nowhere love triangle that I find tiring in other dystopian novels. Their relationship has history, and I love how the author shows how they've grown to really love each other with their backgrounds. In their struggles they encounter horrible rules in which they are either forced together, or forced apart but through it all, their love survives and flourishes even in the upmost times of danger.
The twist at the end really jumpstarted me to want to read more, so I'm pumped by the second book. With this story, you don't really know what to expect next and that's what I'm really looking forward to in the second book. In all, I really think this is a great unique dystopian novel that incorporates some elements of other well known books, with a twist at every corner. I'd definitely recommend this book if you love the Divergent, Delirium and Hunger Games series.
