In ALWAYS RIGHT historian Niall Ferguson offers a characteristically original, incisive and witty account of Margaret Thatcher's reign – the word seems appropriate – as British Prime Minister. Denounced by her enemies as divisive and dictatorial, Thatcher was the greatest leader Britain has produced since Winston Churchill. The standard bearer for a decisive economic regime-change, she was also a social revolutionary who shook up the stagnant English class system. Yet she was a foreign policy realist, who restored her country’s standing in the world. And far from being an over-bearing prime minister, she ultimately fell victim to the machinations of Cabinet government. ALWAYS RIGHT is a fittingly frank assessment of a great woman who made history.
Niall Ferguson is the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford. He has published fourteen books, including The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World, Civilization: The West and the Rest and, most recently, The Great Degeneration: How Institutions Decay and Economies Die. An accomplished broadcaster, in 2009 he won the International Emmy for Best Documentary. In 2010 he won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Service and in 2012 the Hayek Prize for Lifetime Achievement.

Well, almost always right.
By D. J. Leedham
Ferguson's apologia for Maggie T. We used to call he Thatcher, Thatcher, Milk Snatcher. Because she withdrew the free third of a pint of milk distributed at school. I'm not a Maggie fan, not a Ferguson fan. Nevertheless I think he is broadly correct in his assessment of Thatcher's rule as PM. Hate to admit it after so many years of despising her politics and her persona. Ferguson has it three quarters right. Something had to be done. Neither political party seemed to have the intestinal fortitude to do what had to be done. Maggie took her party of chinless wonders and did what had to be done in the best way she could with the means at her disposal. She deserves the credit Ferguson gives her and he is right to point out how wrong her detractors (including me) were. - Though there is still an open question about how things turned out for contemporary Britain. Every radical transformation involves losses as well as gains. And the changes Thatcher wrought improved material welfare, but with a loss of something intangible, or at least not easily described but easier to feel and, perhaps, regret the passing of.
This is a short, very short survey of the main themes of Thatcher's rule as PM, and how it came unstuck. A quick, easy read. A good primer for those otherwise not so interested in British political history.

Brief
By Chrissy
This was very brief and assumed that the reader has a lot of knowledge about the U.K. in the 1970s as well as the Iron Lady herself. This would be good to read after reading a longer book about her.

Ashamed to Admit this is Over My Head
By J. E. Marlin
I don't know enough about the modern history of England to get most of the references in this book. It assumes you are familiar with the economic, social, and political conditions in England in the 1980's. It's not a history book, it's more of an atmosphere or op/ed piece. I got the impression it would have been very entertaining if I had been one of the author's peers and also shared his political pet peeves.
