A few of Thoreau's poems, taken from the "Week" and elsewhere, were added by Mr. Emerson to the volume entitled "Letters to Various Persons" which he brought out in 1865, but it was not till the volume of "Miscellanies" was issued in the Riverside Edition that xivthe otherwise unpublished verse of his that had appeared in The Dial was gathered into a single volume. Besides the Dial contributions, the Riverside "Miscellanies" contained a few poems that first found publication in Mr. Sanborn's Life of Thoreau. But the collection was not intended to be complete.

Many of Thoreau's poems, including his translations from the Anacreontics, are imbedded in the "Week," "Walden," and "Excursions," and it seemed best not to reproduce them in another volume. In 1895, shortly after the publication of the Riverside Thoreau, Mr. Henry S. Salt and Mr. Frank B. Sanborn brought out a book entitled "Poems of Nature by Henry David Thoreau," in which were collected "perhaps two thirds of [the poems] which Thoreau preserved." "Many of them," says the Introduction to that volume, "were printed by him, in whole or in part, among his early contributions to Emerson's Dial, or in his own two volumes, the Week and Walden.... Others were given to Mr. Sanborn for publication, by Sophia Thoreau, the year after her brother's death (several appeared in the Boston Commonwealth in 1863); or have been furnished from time to time by Mr. Blake, his literary executor." This volume contained a number of poems which had not before appeared in any of Thoreau's published books. Such poems are now added to those of the Riverside Edition. The present collection, however, no more than its predecessors pretends to completeness. It includes only those of Thoreau's poems which have been previously published and which are not contained in other volumes of this series. A list of xvthe poems and scattered bits of verse printed in the other volumes will be found in an Appendix. The Journal also contains, especially in the early part, a number of heretofore unpublished poems which it seems best to retain in their original setting.

About the Author
Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

Great debut - spanking romance!

This was a fun story with eroticism, spankings, humor, a little bit of drama, and a DD overtone.

Luke Summers, Hollywood Heartthrob, is taking a break from acting while working on his production company when he literally runs into a woman who is immune to his good looks and charm.

Molly Mackenzie, Mac, has grown up in the spotlight since childhood . Her grandfather is a movie producer, and her parents were both actors. She has a fiery personality, a chip on her shoulder, and is not impressed with Luke in their first meeting.

She had just been fired from her job as a writer for a cheesy sitcom, when she runs into Luke, and an old "friend" in the elevator. The beautiful, feisty young woman is not in the mood to fawn all over the hunk. This makes Luke even more interested in her.
Luke emails Mac inviting her to dinner, and she begrudgingly accepts.

Things have been difficult for Mac. Her boyfriend dumped her and took all of her savings last year. Then Mac is sent a blackmail picture of her nude, demanding 1 million dollars. She doesn't really want to go out on a date, but her friend talks her into it.

Luke is immediately drawn to Mac's fiery personality, and the fact that she clashes with him. But he also likes to lead. He's always had a tough time finding girlfriends who would let him lead, but who were also strong willed enough to keep him on his toes. And he sees this wonderful combination in Mac.

After he sees her doing some unsafe actions, he gives her a swat on her bottom, which turns into a sexy game of chase. Mac has always been fascinated with spanking, but had been turned down and called a freak the one time she had asked an ex - boyfriend to spank her. So she has never acted out her fantasy.

When Luke takes her to her bedroom for a sexy, fun spanking, Mac is so scared and unsure that she stops him. She explains that she is nervous and embarrassed. Luke firmly tells her that it is ok to ask for what she wants, and that he won't laugh or judge her.
He gives her a nice, little fun spanking as foreplay; that is just light enough to get her aroused and let her get used to trusting him.
This is followed by a very nice sexual encounter afterwards. I appreciated the author's use of condoms in this scene.

Mac tries to avoid Luke the next day, running from the possible new relationship, but Luke takes mattes into his own hands, and forces a meeting with her. In what is becoming a recurring theme in the story, Luke tells Mac to ask for what she wants, instead of running away from her problems.

They decide to give a relationship a try, even though Mac is still hesitant.

Luke keeps pushing Mac to trust him, and ask for what she wants. She starts to trust him, but still won't let him in on her biggest secret, that someone is trying to blackmail her with naked pictures of herself.

They mainly play with erotic spankings until one day, while vacationing in Greece, when Luke finally introduces Mac to punishment spankings. Though she hates it, she realizes that it was deserved and needed, and that she was finally able to release all the pain and guilt while over his knee.
Luke also teaches Mac to ask for quick maintenance or attitude adjustment spankings. I like the consensual spankings he gives her, while reminding her she is not weird for wanting this in her life.

When Luke asks Mac to move in with him, she refuses. Not because she wants to break up, but because she still needs some space and time. She is also still hiding the blackmail threat from him, trying to protect him and his career.

Mac tries to get everything taken care of on her own, but to no avail. The pictures come out, and she hides in a bar, drowning her sorrows and guilt in alcohol. She feels so badly for hurting Luke, and doesn't think she can face him. She has run away again, hurting Luke and her friends and family in the process.

Luke is relieved when her friend finds her, and brings her back safely. But he is also furious that she kept this from him, and ran when things got tough. He leaves her a message on her cell phone, "You don't have to be afraid to ask for what you want." And waits for her to make the next move.

I won't give away the ending, but suffice it to say, I was very pleased with it.
This was a fun read, with great spankings and sex, a good plot, likeable characters, and a Happily Ever After Ending.

Super Cute, Sexy, Fun Spanking Romance

This was a great read. It's a full length fun, sexy romance with spankings. I liked the characters right from the start, both Mac and Luke behaved realistically, were three dimensional, 'real' people who had this great romance. The plot itself had dimensions and although the focus was the romance between Luke and Mac, the story around it was exciting. The spankings were sexy - the way they began was realistic, just a well written, really well written and edited book.

"The Necessity of Atheism" is a treatise on atheism by the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, printed in 1811 by C. and W. Phillips in Worthing while Shelley was a student at University College, Oxford. A copy of the first version was sent as a short tract signed enigmatically to all heads of Oxford colleges at the University. At that time the content was so shocking to the authorities that he was "rusticated" (expelled from the University) for refusing to deny authorship, together with his friend and fellow student, Thomas Jefferson Hogg. A revised and expanded version was printed in 1813.

Shelley's early profession of atheism in this tract not only led to his expulsion from Oxford but also branded him as a radical agitator and thinker, setting an early pattern of marginalisation and ostracism from the intellectual and political circles of his time. Though Shelley's poetry and prose output remained steady throughout his life, most publishers and journals declined to publish his work for fear of being arrested themselves for blasphemy or sedition.

Shelley did not live to see success and influence in his time, although these reach down to the present day not only in literature, but in major movements in social and political thought.

Shelley's publication of "The Necessity of Atheism"---or rather, his refusal to repudiate it---resulted in his explusion from Oxford, and later in a falling-out with his father.

In the Essay on Christianity, he observes, "Jesus Christ would hardly have cited, as an example of all that is gentle and beneficent and compassionate, a Being who shall deliberately scheme to inflict on a large portion of the human race tortures indescribably intense and indefinitely protracted; who shall inflict them, too, without any mistake as to the true nature of pain---without any view to future good---merely because it is just."

In The Necessity of Atheism, he argues, "It is urged that man knows... that whatever is not eternal must have had a cause. When this reasoning is applied to the universe, it is necessary to prove that it was created: until that is clearly demonstrated we may reasonably suppose that it has endured from all eternity. We must prove design before we can infer a designer... it is easier to suppose that the universe has existed from all eternity than to conceive a being beyond its limits capable of creating it..." He adds, "this God is himself founded only on the authority of a few men who pretend to know him, and to come in his name and announce him on earth. A God made by man undoubtedly has need of man to make himself known to man."

He further states, "The all-powerful, should he not have more convincing means by which to show himself to man than these ridiculous metamorphoses, these pretended incarnations, which are attested by writers so little in agreement among themselves?... could he not convince the human mind in an instant of the things he wished to make known to it?.. No one would then be able to doubt the existence of God, of his clear will, or his visible intentions."

In his essay, "A Refutation of Deism," he says, "The supposition that God has never supernaturally revealed his will to man at any other period than the original creation of the human race, necessarily involves a compromise of his benevolence. It assumes that he withheld from mankind a benefit which it was in his power to confer. That he suffered his creatures to remain in ignorance of truths essential to their happiness and salvation." He adds sarcastically, "I will admit that one prediction of Jesus Christ has been indisputably fulfilled. 'I come not to bring peace upon earth, but a sword.' [Mt 10:34] Christianity indeed has equalled Judaism in the atrocities, and exceeded it in the extent of its desolation."

I want to like this book, But...

Tiffany Cook makes a good effort of combining and hiding veggies, etc into Kid Friendly meals. I noticed a few glaring mistakes though. I'm not sure if this eBook was proofread professionally, (if so, Tiffany, you need your money back.) but it doesn't appear to be. Issue #1, ingredients are listed in both metric and US Standard randomly throughout the book (mixed in the same recipe). I do keep a scale in my kitchen, but most homes (American that is) do not. If this is US Customer based, keep it all standard and estimate your meat/protein amounts. Example, 500g cooked ground beef (is that 1c, 2c, etc..?) it saves a step. Issue #2, in two recipes I noticed the photo of the recipe did not match the description of the dish. Are these Tiffany's actual images or Googled images of something "close enough" to add to the page. Example, Chicken Tenders w/ Asparagus & Pistachios, the image is clearly Broccoli and Chicken Stirfry. Additionally, Sweet Chilli Stir Fry w/ Chicken, that is Shrimp not chicken pictured. This makes me wonder about the rest of the book and what maybe I didn't catch in a quick scan of the book. Three Stars, it's not bad, but isn't not good.

This author wrote an intriguing, painful short story, about a boy, suffering from a very rare, fictional disorder......He can never go out when it rains or he will die...Great characterization, and a believable, suspenseful storyline.....I will adress the typos, there were two at the end, but the story was so excellently written that it out weighed it....Even "Bestsellers", have slipped a typo coming from big publishing houses, and I have been reading all my life.....For the enjoyment, and my profession......

The majority of the story is narrated by the boy, John Woodward, and he gives you a complete picture, of what his hellish world is like....You feel his emotinal pain like acid being poured on you...He tells you what it feels like being a celebrity freak, lab rat, cash horse to your parents, isolated, trapped, and no friends......But this all changes, when his parents dump him again for a long trip aroud the world....
You see, so far he has made it to age 17, but being hungry for any kind of human contact, he accidentally let's "kindness" disguised as "evil" enter his life...Will he make it to age 18, what he has been waiting for his whole life........Or will the whole world get to see him melt away........

((I was drawn to this story because of my profession, and the author's perfect depiction of what it's like to live with a very real, rare, genetic, painful disorder: XP (Xeroderma Pigmentosum).... Which children are afflicted with at an early age, where just a few seconds in the suns rays, burns their skin intensely, severely painful, and disfigures them....Due to numerous cancers, neurological disorders, only 40% make it to age 35-40........))

Great Characters in Stories with Even Greater Endings

So I found out about Travis McBee through his YouTube channel. I want to be a writer so I found a guy who gives tips about writing and how to do it to get published. After so long of binge watching and learning, I figured I watched this guy and listened to advice…so why don’t I finally read something that he wrote. I’m a big fan of short stories and have all sorts of anthologies sitting on my bookshelf and this one will be a great addition to that collection! Most of the stories are really easy to get into and just fly through it with lots of enjoyment. Each story is really entertaining and I will give each of them another read. I reviewed each of the short stories and you can find them on their respective listings on Amazon.
However there are two stories of flash fiction that are exclusive to this collection and their reviews are as follows…

Being Naughty
This one, shorter than all of the other stories in this collection, was really solid. Because of its shortness, it had little room to fail and it didn’t. It was really simple and had a really interesting twist.

Famous
This story deals with an issue that hopefully will never happen again. It is about a rejected, never noticed kid who tends a community college and decides to kill everyone in his class in order to achieve fame. He chains the doors shut so everyone is locked in. Do things go the way he wants and there is nothing more than pure misery for everyone including the reader or does it not go his way? You’ll just have to read and find out.

So I would recommend this book to an older audience that is looking for some really interesting stories to read! There are some spelling and grammatical mistakes in here, but they didn't bother me any. I can look past that kind of stuff haha

The sound of a truck on gravel woke her and she peeled her eyes open to look over the balcony at Erich’s truck. She’d finally fallen asleep as the sun came up, so her head was foggy and her fingers were stiff from clutching the blanket to her. He glanced up as he got out of his truck, and did a double take when he saw her there.
“What the hell are you doing?” he demanded.
“We need to work on your greetings,” she muttered, unfolding herself from the chair. “I was sleeping.”
“Well, wake up. We have work to do. Your mom’s sending me to town to get some heaters for the festival.”
A heater sounded really good right now. She curled her frozen toes against the concrete of the balcony. But what time was it, and how long had she been asleep? Not long. “What time is it?”
“Eight thirty or so.”
Geez, she’d been asleep a little more than an hour. “I don’t feel like it.”
“I didn’t ask. Come on, we have work to do.”
She could stand here and argue with him, or she could just go. The truck would be warm, and the drive was long enough that she could get a nap in. For some reason that sounded really nice, napping in the car while he drove.
“I’ll be right down.”
Instead of hitting her luggage, she went to her closet and pulled out an old warm flannel shirt and jeans. She washed her face, brushed her teeth and braided her hair before heading downstairs.
“I hope you have breakfast and coffee for the road,” she said as she closed the door behind her.
He looked her up and down and grinned, his gaze lingering on her breasts that strained a bit against the flannel. “Wear that shirt a lot in Houston, do you?”
She scowled at him. “I haven’t worn it in years.”
“Still looks good on you.”
She strode past him to the passenger side of the truck, hoping she’d masked how pleased his words made her. “Turn on the heater. I’m cold.”

I picked up this read because I love Christmas and cowboy stories. Erich is a sexy foreman on a ranch in San Antonio and is in love with his boss's daughter, Aubrey. Aubrey left home 12 years ago to go to the big city to become a cop. As she comes home for her annual holiday visit two weeks early, Erich knows something is wrong. His suspicions are confirmed when he picks Aubrey up from the airport drunk.

Aubrey is reeling from a drug bust gone badly and the one wrong choice that changed her entire life. She's back home to lick her wounds and drown out the screams of a fourteen-year-old boy she will never forget. Not knowing how to deal with the pain and guilt, Erich introduces her to a friend and former soldier who knows exactly what Aubrey is feeling. As Aubrey starts to deal with the ramifications of her actions, a gang leader shows up to retaliate against her for the life she accidentally took.

The story was a quick, enjoyable read. I loved the fact that Aubrey and Erich were able rekindle their love. I love reading about strong female leads. Aubrey was a competent cop until her core was shaken with a horrible situation. She tried to drown her problems with alcohol, but with the help of a few well-placed people, she rebounded quickly and kicked ass in the end.

I loved this story, set in a small town. Erich was caring and he and his family watched out for Aubrey. She was tough, yet vulnerable. I loved the writing, which was emotional.

A great Christmas story!

A cop and a Cowboy. When a tragic accident happens the cop comes home to find some peace of mind. The cowboy who has loved her for a long time helps her find it. This is the first book I have read by M.J. Fredrick but not the last. She hooks you right at the first and holds you right up to the end. Worth your time to read this one. I encourage everyone to read this one!!!!

Once a university campus in Manila, from 1942 to 145 it was the largest prison camp in the Philippines, a place where civilians were placed by the Japanese.

But to the women locked up there it was something else.

A Living Hell.

More than 4,000 internees were held there from January 1942 until February 1945.

The book is based on the diaries of Isla Corfield.

An Englishwoman whose comfortable life in Shanghai was suddenly disrupted by the outbreak of World War Two, she fled with her daughter Gill on an evacuee ship.

But the ship was captured by the Japanese -- and Isla and Gill would have to struggle to survive as prisoners of war in both Santo Tomas and Los Banos internment camps.

In the communities of the camps, Isla and her daughter experienced the extremes of both friendship and loss. Cut-off from information about the war and with no end to their internment in sight, the pair experience starvation, disease and desperation.

Finally liberated by the Americans after four years, Isla's story is both humbling and life-affirming - the story of one brave Englishwomen's battle to survive against terrible odds.

It is one of the great untold stories of World War Two.

Very much worth reading

This book is well worth reading as history. I had previously listened to a book about the Bataan Death March so I was somewhat familiar with Japanese atrocities in WW II. This was very much a personal book based on the diaries of one prisoner at Santo Tomas Internment Center. I am truly amazed by the persistence and will to live of these people. It didn't sound like they said to themselves, "I'm going to make it through another day" or anything particularly conscious; they just kept going. And I cried when the Americans showed up to rescue them, a scene that is related very movingly and very personally. I really wonder if I could survive as they did, with dignity and spirit and mind intact.

My only complaint about the Kindle book is that it has so very many "typos" in it. I finally figured out the "code" so I could just keep reading right over the errors. The one that stumped me longest was "Mter" which apparently was "After" when "After" appeared at the beginning of a sentence. It was also odd how these errors appeared, quite rare initially - I don't think they started until about the middle of the book - and gradually becoming more and more frequent. They didn't make the book impossible to read because they were consistent, but it was like someone got tired of proof-reading and just let the rest of them go by the end.

Only the strong survive.

I am a World War II buff, and I especially like the stories of strong women who endured the conflict. This is the story of a woman who, with her daughter, was imprisoned by the Japanese when she was trapped in Manila at its fall. She found that almost worse than the Japanese was behavior of those with whom she shared imprisonment! (This is a recurrent thread in stories of the prison camps of the Japanese). Without money, without local ties, she and her daughter were somewhat adrift, but her strong determination to survive and to keep her daughter safe kept her going. This is a heart-stopping story, and you will cheer the heroine all the way through.

Another interesting story of survival under the worst conditions. Part of this story has been told in another book as I instantly recognized it and thought I must have already read the book. I soon found that was not a duplicate, but a full rendition of the author's diary. Fascinating how some in such conditions share and to the extent possible and try to mitigate the suffering of their fellows, while others profiteer. The author benefited from friends and managed to survive with her integrity intact.
