Nearly two years ago, Errol Jacomine had disappeared, but he would not stay gone. She knew this; she had destroyed two of his careers, twice thwarted his attempts to win control over his fellow human beings, to gain a following, and to dominate. He would be back, and he would try to kill her. To forget it for a day in the woods, for an evening in her courtyard, for a moment, for a millisecond, was dangerous and possibly deadly.
Jacomine's son, Daniel, had been arrested, charged with half a dozen crimes, and eventually convicted of murder as the result of one of Jacomine's schemes. He was due to be sentenced in a couple of days.
How that would affect his father Skip couldn't know, but it had probably precipitated the dream. Jacomine might not even notice, perhaps having written Daniel off.
She left for work feeling hunted and resentful of her psyche for rubbing her nose in it. She knew all that, and what could she do about it? Exactly what? she asked herself angrily. Later, the dream seemed more a premonition than a warning.

Don't let the title fool you. In this tense but melodramatic entry in Edgar-winner Smith's (New Orleans Mourning) Skip Langdon series, the story hinges on a mean man-sociopath Errol Jacomine, who, helped by plastic surgery, has reinvented himself as a charismatic talk-show host. As to women, several besides Detective Langdon figure prominently, each working herself into one rage after another. And blues? While most of the mayhem occurs in New Orleans, this Crescent City is devoid of music-blues or otherwise. Other Big Easy attractions, like the ornate statuary in the city's renowned cemeteries, lend local color, as do po'boys, levees and the French Quarter, serving as backdrop for the characters' internal lives. Without exception, these people bear deep psychic wounds, which become figurative and literal gashes as they endure murder attempts, unlawful arrests, defamation and torture. Emotional updates come as insistently as a Louisiana forecaster tracking a Gulf hurricane. Some mood shifts jar. Given to snits, con artist Jacomine repeatedly drops his guard. And when a near-comatose woman suddenly starts haranguing an FBI investigator, the scene rather than intensifying seems contrived. Likewise, coincidence looms larger than some readers will accept. Nonetheless, fans should welcome this overheated installment as eagerly as others in this well-established series. FYI: Smith is also the author of Louisiana Bigshot, the second title in her series featuring African-American detective Talba Wallis. A former reporter, Smith has recently become a fully licensed PI in New Orleans.

About the Author
Julie Smith currently lives and writes in the Faubourg Marigny district of New Orleans, a neighborhood of nightclubs, restaurants and coffee shops where shady characters mix with artists. The author of nineteen novels, she was born and raised in Savannah before escaping to the University of Mississippi. After graduation, Smith became a reporter, first for the New Orleans Times-Picayune and later the San Francisco Chronicle. She lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for many years before returning to New Orleans.
Smith abandoned reporting for writing mysteries in the early 1980s, writing a series featuring attorney Rebecca Schwartz and a second series starring Paul McDonald, a reporter turned mystery writer whose fate you wouldn't wish on a dog. A few years later, she launched a third series featuring New Orleans police detective Skip Langdon with New Orleans Mourning, which won the Edgar Award for Best Mystery Novel in 1991. She currently alternates between writing about Skip Langdon and Talba Wallis, an African-American poet/private eye who debuted in "Louisiana Hotshot."

I've mostly enjoyed the series, but I have to ask...

What is with the gratuitous animal cruelty?
I barely got started with this last book in the series when I had to read about how a dog died in agony. Throughout the series I've had to read about how a little dog was thrown against a wall and killed, and how a woman baked her cat slowly in the oven because it bit her. None of this really advanced the story or did much of anything except make me sick and sad. I realize these are books about cops in pretty much the seamiest city in the US, but come on. I don't remember this type of thing in the earlier books, and as an animal lover and advocate I'm very attuned to it. But, you don't have to be an animal lover, just a decent person, to be offended by reading about animal cruelty. I'm fully aware that people do terrible things to animals in real life, but why go out of your way to detail it in a work of fiction that is meant to be entertaining? It makes me wonder if the author has something against animals. At any rate, I'm deleting the book mostly unread and won't be starting the Baroness' spin-off series, which I was planning to do. The horribly detailed animal cruelty has become a trend and I have had enough.
As a side note, I liked Skip a lot better in the earlier books. I thought she was a better person and a better cop early on. I suppose she's been hardened by the things she's seen and by the ever-present threat of Jacomine hanging over her, but I prefer the early Skip.

Detective Langdon (and Ms. Smith) need to move on

Reading established series is like visiting old friends. However, many of the series heroines we loved when they were younger, edgier and less conventional have become almost mainstream as they age, and, face it, we don't read escapist literature to catch up on folks just like us. It's welcome when the characters gain maturity and wisdom, but kind of dull when there's no risk anymore in their relationships -- even adversaries are well-known, with measure already taken.
New Orleans Skip Langdon is a prime example (Sharon McCone is another, and Kinsey and V.I. are both heading that way; Smith's Talba Wallis is a delightful exception, although she's only in two books of her own so far). In "Mean Woman Blues," we check in with our pal Skip and her friends, but they're all leading such a healthy, normal existence that the reader's real focus is on some relatively peripheral characters, and mostly on Skip's "nemesis," Errol Jacomine. The reader becomes so intent on what Jacomine is up to that the author has to keep bludgeoning us over the head with the point that he is Evil, and our sympathies *should* lie with Skip, if we can just remember where she is and what she's doing in the story.
The side story, involving the theft of statuary from New Orleans' "Cities of the Dead" is perfunctory, and I wished for a little more of the atmosphere of what must be a remarkable sight. The cemeteries are obviously so everyday to Skip and her co-workers, however, that this midwesterner is left with a rather confused image reminiscent of decorated storage garages.
Both Skip and Smith seem "stuck" on Jacomine, and I hope they are able to move on to reclaim Skip's perseverence in the face of new challenges... the old ones are getting, well, old.

Love this series

The Skip Langdon Series is one that has kept my interest from start to finish on each of the books I have read. I have read some of the reviews, and seen those who say drop the Jacomine line and move on. Well to those of you who feel that way, I would ask you to do something. Next police officer you see, or detective would be even better, ask them how they feel about that 'One who got away". It never leaves them until the case is solved and the perp arrested. So, this book IS true to life in that sense for sure.
Now let's get to the character of Terri. Common on! You guys who think she is too ditzy just have not seen that many different types of people. And as for the banking fraud being a stretch, not really. I know someone up here this happened to, except for the arrest part. Many people can't balance a check book, and if they don't have much money to begin with, it makes it even harder.
As to Skip Langdon. Yes, she is getting older. If you think about it though, the older ones get the better cases. Remember There have been many older detectives on TV and in movies who are older. Think Cagney and Lacey for one set of detectives who were older.
The characters are easy to relate to, even Terri. I think there is even more character description in this book than the others I have read. This part could be just me though.
The story is well written and easy to follow. It is easy to read and flows nicely. I like this book because the author does not need to resort to hot sex scenes to tell her story. I also like it because there is no blood and gore. It is pure story written with the authors imagination.
The story:
Rev. Errol Jacomine, the most dangerous man in the world, is trying to kill Detective Skip Langdon. In fact, he hates her with an obsessive passion. Skip has broken his crime sprees twice, but sadly, each of those times he has managed to slip away from her. On this return though, he is even more dangerous than before. he has many connections now who he can hire to have her killed. Jacomine is not only mad at Skip now, he is literally 'mad' as in insane. As things would have it, Jacomine is loosing his touch with 'his' women. They are starting to see what he is and want to bump him off too. Will Skip get there first before they do? Read the book and see.
I do recommend this book for all ages as there is nothing prohibitive for teens in the book.
