About the Author

Sam Himelstein, PhD, is associate core faculty at Sofia University, where he teaches graduate courses in research methodology and incorporating mindfulness into psychotherapy. He is also director of clinical services and research at the Mind Body Awareness Project, where he initiates research projects regarding mindfulness and adolescents with other academic professionals. He is a licensed psychologist who works with high-risk adolescents in individual, group, and family therapy. In addition, Himelstein is the executive director of Engaging the Moment, a continuing-education business that trains clinicians in how to approach adolescents with mindfulness and other contemplative practices.

Well-written, thorough, and much needed information for anyone who works with youth

Sam Himelstein has written a very well researched, easy to follow academic book covering a model of engaging with high-risk youth that may prove to be applicable in many places and settings. This book's primary audience is clinicians; however, it is relevant to and written in a manner accessible to anyone who serves in a mentoring, coaching, or other helping role with adolescents, particularly those at high risk.

The layout of the book is clear and well organized. The first section covers the worldview of the author as well as philosophical context of the mindfulness-based model of relating with youth through Buddhist, existential, and humanistic lenses. The second section covers themes that may arise in conversation with adolescents, such as issues pertaining to spirituality, identity, suffering, choice, change, and relationship. The final section covers practical mindfulness-based skills and methods that can be employed when working with adolescents in on-one-one or group settings. Also included in this final section is a mindfulness-based conceptual framework for learning how the therapist/teacher/counselor can track their own awareness of the process of the work they are doing with the youth.

This book presents with much more than concepts and ideas. It contains case illustrations and examples taken from the author's own extensive experience of working with youth. I highly recommend this book for anyone working with adolescents, and also for anyone interested in the relational underpinnings of mindfulness-based work.

Deeply grounded in compassion and mindfulness

As a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine, and a mindfulness practitioner and teacher myself - I was very interested in this book. I've met Dr. Himelstein and seen him teach, so I had high expectations. I was not disappointed! This book presents a very thoughtful approach to working with this population, which is deeply grounded in compassion, positive youth development, and the critical importance clinician's own deep mindfulness practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone who aspires to support the healing and resilience of youth living in high-risk environments.

Teaching Mindfulness to at-risk youth? Buy this book!

Sam's book is filled with down to earth tips and useful info for leading mindfulness classes with "at risk" youth (or any group for that matter). His writing style is accessible, warm and easy to read. Highly recommended.
