Plenty of goodies inside.

This volume is the companion piece to the Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy, also by J.W. Rinzler. Both are wonderful, well-made books and essential to any Star Wars fan who is curious about how the movies were made. These books are also excellent choices for anyone curious about working in the movie or video game industry. A young artist or director could learn a lot by studying these volumes.
Why storyboards? Storyboards allow us to peek into the inner workings, the thinking behind a movie. We see what the director and designers originally had in mind. I love seeing the differences between early storyboards and what appeared in the theaters. This volume begins with some odd-looking Trade Federation aliens (their head designs were originally the heads of what later became Geonosians). We also get a look at a cut shot of Jar Jar's devastating return to the hidden Gungan city just prior to the final battle of The Phantom Menace. To me, these little "easter eggs" are worth their weight in gold.
Each Storyboards volumes cover the entire trilogy, putting all three movies into a single volume. The benefit is only paying for two books. The cost is that it is impossible to show all the storyboards for every movie. For example, very little of the first half of Attack of the Clones is included (but a great deal of the second half is provided). But Rinzler still manages to get a lot of rarities into the book. One key scene in Phantom Menace was never storyboarded and was drawn up specifically for this book. (Apparently Lucas did not give certain scenes or moments to storyboard artists for obvious security reasons.)
There isn't much writing in these books. Just some intro stuff and captions. But what's there is very informative, such as explaining how some scenes don't get storyboarded at all or are instead planned out with a new method called "animatics." Also, I enjoyed reading how a crew of storyboard artists work together and work with Lucas (who dreaded working on storyboards). That has to be intimidating.
I give this five stars with a caveat... I wish it was more. I wish we got every scene from every movie. I wish all of the boards were printed larger. I wish there was more text for every challenge, every change made, every curious moment. But I realize the economics of selling niche books like this. I am very happy these were made, and very glad I bought them.
If you've bought Rinzler's absolutely essential "making of" books for Star Wars, then consider these volumes as perfect companion pieces. They provide a bit of the history that the other books couldn't fit in.
