Im weiteren Verlauf der Handlung kommt heraus, dass die Bestellung eines Landvermessers tatsächlich vor Jahren diskutiert wurde, es bleibt aber bis zum Ende ungeklärt, ob eine Berufung K.s tatsächlich erfolgte.
K. ersucht in der Folge immer wieder um Einlass in das Schloss, das stets allgegenwärtig und fern zugleich ist. Doch er erhält ihn nicht. Je intensiver sich K. bemüht, desto weiter entfernt er sich vom Ziel. Das System, zu dem auch das am Fuße des Schlosses gelegene Dorf gehört, versperrt sich ihm.
